FLAT TRACK AMA PRO FLAT TRACK ROUND 3/MAY 24, 2015 INDIANA STATE FAIRGROUNDS/SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS P84 came through to win the May Mile. Smith was not without challengers. Sammy Halbert, Willie McCoy and Jared Mees all spent time up front. In fact, de- fending AMA Pro Grand National Champion Mees had his number one Harley-Davidson XR750 in the lead coming out of turn four on the final lap. But facing 35 mph headwinds coming down the front straight, Mees had no hope of holding off Smith, who made a perfect slingshot move around the outside to take the victory by several bike lengths over Mees. The official margin of victory was .136 of a second. Factory Harley-Davidson's Brad Baker and Briggs Auto/Scott Powersports Kawasaki's Sammy Halbert were in the lead pack as well. The spread between first and fourth was a scant .276 of a second. The final came down to a 13-lap sprint after the race was red flagged when Johnny Lewis lost control of his head-shaking Lloyd Brothers Ducati down the front straight and crashed. Lewis was shaken up in the >>FISHER WINS GNC2 Davis Fisher rode his number 67M Racing Unlimited/Parkinson Bros. Kawasaki EX650 to the GNC2 main event victory in a tight battle over Jamison Minor, also Kawasaki mounted with backing from Roy Built, Moose Racing and Upriteracing.com. Starting from third on the grid, Fisher benefited from earning the holeshot following the second staggered start of the main. Fisher edged out a hard charging Minor in the race's final laps to earn his first victory of 2015, and his win puts him atop the point standings after three rounds. "As the race went on, I knew it was going to come down to the final laps," said Fisher. "I saw Minor catching up to me and I just didn't want to make any mistakes. It was defi- nitely a battle and a great race. It feels good to get the win and achieve my goal today." Closing out the podium was the number 44E Goeken Racing Kawasaki rider, Nick Armstrong. Brandon Wilhelm, riding the 24J Mike Butler Racing Kawasaki and Dan Bromley, aboard the number 54A Bill Werner Racing Kawasaki, rounded out the top five, respectively. Andrew Luker owned the GNC2 points lead heading into Springfield, but a crash on lap three of the main event forced him out of the race, clearing the way for a big shake up in the standings. Luker's 18th place finish puts him back to third in points. Davis Fisher took top honors in the GNC2 class. Jared Mees (1) was in the lead until Smith (42) drafted past the reigning champ for the win.
