FLAT TRACK AMA PRO FLAT TRACK ROUND 3/MAY 24, 2015 INDIANA STATE FAIRGROUNDS/SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS P90 good corner and I approached the last turn a little too low and he came around the outside and got me at the line." The 2013 champ Brad Baker was in the mix too at the end and he explained his last-lap strategy. "I got a good run on Bryan [Smith] and could have passed him for the lead going into three," Baker said. "But his motorcycle runs phenomenal and I knew if I passed him, he'd pass me right back. I kind of wanted to stay in that position. And then Jared [Mees] stuffed it back underneath me and then it was basically starting over—I had to get by Jared again. I was right on Bryan's back wheel coming down the front straightaway and when Bryan moved over I had so much speed I kind of had to let off so I didn't run into the back of Jared." The series now moves to the Sacramento Mile this coming Saturday. It's a place that Smith has dominated in recent years. He'll be looking to extend his record winning streak there to five this year and move even higher in the championship chase. CN Final 1. Bryan Smith (Kawasaki) 2. Jared Mees (Harley-Davidson) 3. Brad Baker (Harley-Davidson) 4. Sammy Halbert (Kawasaki) 5. Willie McCoy (Harley-Davidson) 6. Henry Wiles (Harley-Davidson) 7. Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. (Harley-Davidson) 8. Mikey Martin (Kawasaki) 9. Doug Lawrence (Kawasaki) 10. Kyle Johnson (Kawasaki) Briefly... Johnny Lewis survived a spectac- ular-looking accident on the front straight halfway through the Spring- field main. Lewis looked strong all day on the Lloyd Brothers Ducati, but did experience some head shake at times, but nothing like what threw him off the machine in the main. "Everything was clicking," Lewis said. "I passed a few guys, saw the lead group and I was like 'Alright, I can make this happen.' Then it got a little wobble and right at the start- finish line it felt like it popped. The bars went in a different direction and I was sitting back staying on the gas and it didn't pick it up. I kind of felt like the front end was falling apart. The triple-clamp stem was actu- ally broke flush, so I don't know if it broke before or it happened once I fell. Thankfully my Alpinestar leathers kept me safe. I was heading towards the wall and dug my hand in and got a little burn, but that's about it. I'll be ready to go at Sacramento." Bryan Smith won the fastest heat race and Jared Mees won the other. Kyle Johnson and Robert Pearson were the semi winners. Cory Texter debuted the new Ya- maha-Motor USA/Memphis Shades Yamaha FZ07 flat track machine. He missed making the main, but said the bike has potential. "We were down on horsepower," Texter said. "This bike is so new there's not a lot of stuff avail- able for them. We're basically running a stock bike with very little modifica- tions. It handles good; we're just lacking some ponies right now." To the victor go the spoils—Smith gets some love on the podium.
