CHAMPIONSHIP BY LARRY LAWRENCE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN J. NELSON J D Beach had 24 hours to mull over his last-lap loss to Josh Herrin in Saturday's thrilling MotoAmerica Supers- port race one. They say anger generally isn't a performance enhancer for athletes, but Beach took his frustrations out on the rest of the field on Sunday and set a blistering pace on his Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha R6 to win race two in convincing fashion. Garrett Gerloff went 3-2 in spite of racing with a broken left pinky suffered in a crash on Friday. Beach's victory puts him atop the championship standings by just a single point over Gerloff, 102-101. Herrin is third with 95 points. "My first win at COTA felt amazing, but to win it in the rain... it just didn't feel like it was a win," Beach said of his first career victory in round one at Texas. "To finally get one in the dry like this is awesome. After yesterday, leading every single lap and then Josh [Herrin] com- ing by me with three corners to go, it was devastating. It was horrible. Today I just wanted to put the race in my own hands and just go for it. It was awe- some."
