VOL. 52 ISSUE 17 APRIL 28, 2015 P83 BY SHAN MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEN HILL AND MOORE T here's no doubt that Kailub Russell is one of the fast- est off-road racers in the country, if not the fastest. The FMF/KTM rider has reeled off four-straight wins in the GNCC series so far in 2015. In addition, Russell is racing the Kenda AMA National Enduro Series, hoping to become the first father/son champions in the series since his father, Jeff, won the championship in 1991. So far, after three rounds, and was—despite having what he thought was a good ride—still beaten by enduro veteran Rus- sell Bobbitt. He was not a happy camper to say the least. Cycle News sat down with Russell at the enduro (before it started) and chatted with Kailub about the 2015 season so far. It seems like you've been having a pretty easy time of it in the GNCC series. Not so sure that anything's ever easy, but it's been going well. I kind of picked up where I left off last season. I've just been riding really well and kind THE RULER OF GNCCS IS HOPING TO DO THE SAME IN ENDUROS LEARNING TO WIN Russell now has three consecu- tive runner-up finishes in the se- ries and leads the standings by nine points over four-time champ Russell Bobbitt. You would think that most people would be happy with that scenario, but not Kailub. In fact, he's down right upset about it. After all, he's used to winning, which he has done a lot of the past three years, so getting sec- onds doesn't sit well with him. Even though he's new to the enduro scene, he expects to be winning right away, although he's come close, especially at the last event where he led by 45 seconds going into the final test of coming to the races with a game plan on how I want to execute things. Everything's just been falling my way so far. Like I said, I've been riding well and I feel like I did my work in the off-season to get better. It always makes life a little easier when you're good to go and you're rid- ing well. I've been having a pretty good time with doing some more different things in racing. Obvi- ously, I'm racing enduros, the sprint enduros and the GNCCs. Everything's been going well so far. Do you think riding all the different types of races helps your riding overall?
