40 Years Ago April 29, 1975
We celebrated the start of the SoCal speedway season with a speedway il-
lustration on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Mike Bast got it started
with a victory at Irwindale… We traveled to Ft. Hood where the Texas Two-Day
Qualifier was held—on the Army base—and it was Penton's Carl Cranke who
impressed the troops with the win… Roger DeCoster and Heikki Mikkola
battled it out at the 500cc MX Grand Prix opener in Switzerland. DeCoster
went 1-2; Mikkola 2-1… We tested Suzuki's
very first production RM motocrosser, the
1975 RM125, and the Yamaha 400 MX.
30 Years Ago May 1, 1985
Cycle News featured the Kawasaki KX500 on the cover 30 years ago to
accompany our test on the big-bore two-stroke motocrosser… Kawasaki's
Jeff Ward took over the points lead after taking top honors at the Houston
Supercross. In the two-main format, Ward went 1-2, topping Keith Bowen's
2-4. Second-moto winner, Johnny O'Mara, went 8-1. Eddie Warren won the
125cc Pro-Am main… Sam Wills and Terry
Vance starred at the IDBA National Drag
Race in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Ivan Tedesco got front-page honors for clinching the 125cc West Supercross
Championship at the Seattle Supercross. James Stewart ran off with the
250 main-event win. Ricky Carmichael clinched the THQ World Supercross
Grand Prix Championship… Alex Barros won the World Championship Road
Race round in Portugal… We tested KTM's lightweight 200 EXC… Mike Laf-
ferty and brother Rich Lafferty went 1-2 at the Greenbrier National Enduro in
Port Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Fantic's latest trials bike, the Section 249, was pictured on the cover 20
years ago to accompany our test on the Italian trialer… And speaking of
trials, we covered the World round in Luxembourg that Tommi Ahvala won…
We made the trek to Jericho, Utah, to cover the Shawn Gerber Memorial
Hare & Hound. Danny Hamel and Ty Davis battled it out with Hamel prevail-
ing… In another duel, Scott Summers and
Guy Cooper went at it at the Loretta Lynn's
GNCC. Summers came out on top… Stefan
Everts won the Dutch MX GP.
