T
he third running of the
FMF AMA California
Classic Championship
descended on Glen Helen
Raceway, packing the facility
with motor homes, factory big
rigs, families and, of course,
hundreds of racers. The
relatively young event, which
recognizes its winners as AMA
Amateur National Champions,
has grown quickly into one
of the West's largest single
amateur motocross events.
KTM, Kawasaki and Yamaha
and some of their subsidiary
teams had a large presence at
the Classic, where they got the
chance to show off some of
their most promising up-and-
coming talent.
The Classic uses a simple
three-moto format (much like
Loretta Lynn's) with an Olympic
scoring system to weed out
the class champions. Thirty-
three motos were run each
day, with the first motos
held on Friday, the second
motos on Saturday, and the
third motos on Sunday. The
Classic also hosted a round
of the Women's MX (WMX)
Championship, with both of
their motos being held on
Sunday.
