THE YOUNG CONTENDER
Although the forecast looked
grim, the weather held off. And
the competition was heated.
With a year under his belt,
Beaubier looks to get rid of last
year's rookie growing pains.
And with the all-new R1—which
he feels suits his riding style
more—the young Beaubier could
very well give Hayes a run for his
money this season.
He did just that in race two,
countering Hayes' attack in the
final corner before the finish line
to keep his spot up front for the
win.
"I knew it was a short run to
the finish line and I was getting
a bad drive so I was going to try
first gear. I gave him a little love
tap—I'm going to call it a little
love tap," Hayes said. "I don't
think I can take full blame on that
one; I'm pretty sure he saw me in
there and just turned in anyway.
It was close racing. I wanted to
get a shot. I wanted to win the
race just like he did. He just rode
a good race. He did all the right
things. I'm glad it was a close
battle. I'm excited and looking
forward to next weekend."
Beaubier also enjoyed the
battle, and admitted to refusing
to lose.
"I saw him coming in hard in
the last corner and I was like,
no! This is my freaking race, and
I just leaned on him," Beaubier
said. "It was pretty cool to get it
done today. I looked back and
made sure he was up, and then
looked at my leg and was like,
oh, there's some rubber there.
But it's a lot of fun racing these
guys. I feel like we have respect
for each other but at the same
time we can lean on each other
pretty hard. I'm looking forward
Roger Hayden (95) put up a good fight in race
two against Hayes (1) and Beaubier (6), but had
to settle for third with a front tire issue.
