THE UNSUNG HERO
Even with a sizeable chunk of
change on the line, the bot-
tom line of the 2-Stroke MX
Championship was sheer fun,
as evidenced by the ear-to-ear
grins on every podium, regard-
less of their overall results. Case
in point was defending 2-Stroke
Champion Sean Collier. The
Fasthouse racer, once again,
lined up on his trusty 1997 Ka-
wasaki KX500, and although he
ended the day out front by taking
the second-moto win, Collier's
disastrous first moto cost him his
number-one plate.
"The rear shock bolt came
out and then the subframe
ended up breaking; one of the
mounts cracked in half," Collier
explained. "I went off a 50-foot
hit, launched it and landed with
no rear shock. It was bad. It
was like hitting it with a hard-tail
bicycle when I landed."
Collier didn't crash, but the
damage to the bike went beyond
the subframe.
"When that happened, it
destroyed the pipe, it ended
up melting the tank all the way
down. We're impressed that it
didn't end up melting a hole in it.
And the body of the shock got
really damaged.
"I honestly thought that was
the end of our day, but everyone
came together. Literally it was
like 15 people running around
trying to find bolts and nuts and
just trying to get the bike go-
ing for me. I couldn't believe it;
they made it work! Next thing I
know we're sitting on the line for
the next moto and the bike was
solid."
