INTERVIEW
TEAM HONDA HRC'S COLE SEELY
P68
"I consider myself to be a
little bit of a better 450 rider,
but I learn a lot every year
whether it's bike setup or just
learning race to race, taking
little bits of knowledge and
learning every weekend,"
says Seely. "With so many
races back to back it's been
a little bit easier for me to
take one thing from one
weekend and then go into
the next weekend and take
something from that week-
end. I'm constantly learning
and constantly adjusting my
training or my bike setup or
whatever I may be to improve
to the next weekend. I feel
like this year especially I've
been able to do that more so
than past years."
You could dub 2015 as the
year of the starts, because
this year, perhaps more
than any other, good starts have proven to be
more critical than in years past. It's kind of funny,
though, that Seely sort of takes a backwards ap-
proach to practicing for starts than most riders.
"I try not to work too hard on starts because
I don't consider myself a bad starter, and I don't
want to get it into my head that I need to be a bet-
ter starter," says Seely. "I do work on starts fre-
quently, but I think naturally, all of us have done
so many races and so many starts that it kind of
comes natural. Unfortunately this last weekend
[St. Louis SX] I didn't get the greatest start, but
was able to still work my way through the pack. It
definitely helps getting a good start."
In a way, Seely takes the same approach when
it comes to training.
"Probably the biggest thing would be just kind
of listening to myself really," says Seely when it
comes to his training ritual. "If I feel like I'm tired
"I TRY NOT TO WORK TOO HARD
ON STARTS BECAUSE I DON'T
CONSIDER MYSELF A BAD STARTER,
AND I DON'T WANT TO GET IT INTO
MY HEAD THAT I NEED TO BE A
BETTER STARTER."
Seely has already
accomplished his
first goal in the
450 and that's
getting on the
podium, which
he has done four
times. Next on his
list of goals—a win.
