40 Years Ago April 8, 1975
After the previous April Fool's issue, things got back to normal with motocross
returning to the front page to highlight our coverage of the local MX scene… The
first 500cc International Motocross of the year got underway in Holland, where
two Americans—Brad Lackey and Jim Pomeroy—broke into the top five… Our
featured bike test was on the Maico 440, which we dubbed Magnum for being
so "devastating." It made 47 horsepower at
6900 rpm… We interviewed speedway racer

20 Years Ago April 5, 1995
Even though the Daytona rounds were in the book already, we previewed the
1995 AMA Grand National Championship Series and Steve Morehead was
pictured on the cover… Mick Doohan got the World Championship Road Race
Championship going with a win in his home country of Australia at Eastern
Creek… Jeremy McGrath recorded his 26
th
career Supercross win at the Hous-
ton Astrodome, Damon Huffman won the 125cc main… Ricky Carmichael and
Charlie Bogard were some of the big winners at the Lake Whitney International
GNC Finals in Texas… Ty Davis won the Chero-
kee National Enduro in Georgia.

30 Years Ago April 10, 1985
Kenny Roberts was prominently featured on the cover 30 years ago for
winning the World Road Race Championship round in South Africa which in-
cluded beating fierce rival Freddie Spencer… We also took an inside look at
Honda's Shadow 1100… Just down the road from the Cycle News offices, we
witnessed Bubba Shobert's last-lap heroics at the Ascot TT National. He had
help when Alex Jorgensen took a tumble… The dueling Dan's—Ashcraft and
Smith—teamed up to win the Great Mojave 250 desert race… Ron Lechien
won the opening round of the National MX Series at Hangtown.

Our 2005 middleweight sportbike shootout was featured on the cover 10
years ago. Of the six bikes that participated, the Yamaha YZF-6R came out
on top… We also tested the very first Honda CRF450X off-roader… Mike
Lafferty ran off with the Cherokee National Enduro victory… Out west, Na-
than Woods beat the heat and everyone else at the Lake Havasu WORCS
round… Number-615 Ryan Villopoto stole the spotlight at the GNC Finals
at Oak Hill in Decatur, Texas… Nathan Woods and Ty Davis won the Big-6
Night Team Race at Glen Helen.
