We brought up the subject "Sex and Cycles" 40 years ago, which most likely
had something to do with the cover photo and feature story inside titled "Sex &
Cycle: The male homosexual motorcyclist." This, and some other non-typical
stories and photos, all might have had something to do with the cover date… We
featured an illustrated history of the motorcycle helmet… Cycle News tested
the Harley-Davidson SX250 dual purpose… Tony DiStefano won a round of
the Yamaha Super Series in the 500cc class.
30 Years Ago April 3, 1985
A photo of KTM's 125MX was featured on the cover 30 years ago to accom-
pany our riding impression of the small-bore motocrosser… We interviewed
Danny "Magoo" Chandler before he departed to Europe for the upcoming
500cc MXGP Series. He predicted he would be World Champion, riding for
KTM, when all was said and done… Kevin Schwantz turned heads at Willow
Springs after winning the first round of the Kerker/AFM Superbike Series…
We previewed the upcoming GP Road Race Series… Geoff Ballard won a
round of the AMA National Hare Scrambles Series at Daytona… Dan Ash-
craft scored another win in the SoCal desert.

Finland's Juha Salminen made front-page news for winning the second round
of the GNCC Series in Georgia; he already won the opener a few days earlier in
Florida… At the Orlando Supercross, Chad Reed took on Ricky Carmichael,
James Stewart and Kevin Windham, among others, and came away with the
win; Davi Millsaps won the 125cc East main… We tested the Moto Morini
1200 Corsaro… Russ Pearson won the Ocotillo, California, round of the AMA
FMF Hare & Hound National Series… Pee Wee racer Adam Cianciarulo took
top billing at the Spring Classic MX at Whitney.

Jeremy McGrath nabbed a piece of the cover for winning the Indianapolis
Supercross at the RCA Dome; Mickael Pichon won the 125cc main… Todd
Hoy was also featured on the cover for winning the Best In The Desert Vacation
Village Gold Strike desert race in Nevada… Further south, we traveled to Baja
California to cover the SCORE San Felipe 250 won by the Kawasaki-mounted
duo of Danny Hamel and Craig Smith… We tested the Montesa Cota 314R
trials bike… We featured our preview of the 1995
World Championship Road Race Series; Mick
Doohan was the heavy favorite.
