2015 BMW S 1000 RR
FIRST RIDE
P50
Naturally, it's not only elec-
tronics that have been upgrad-
ed. Engineers managed to find
another six horsepower in the
999cc liquid-cooled in-line four-
cylinder powerplant, bringing the
power output of the double R
to 199, which arrives at 13,500
rpm. The reworked head, intake
channels and exhaust system
also grant the RR slightly more
torque with a broader curve that
comes on at 5,000 rpm and
continues smoothly to its peak of
83 lb-ft at 10,500 rpm. Maximum
engine speed is 14,200 rpm.
The team in Munich also
managed to shave 8.8 pounds
(of which 6.6 pounds were lost
in the new exhaust system) off
the new machine, bringing the
weight of the RR down to 449
pounds fully wet (that's with ABS
and traction control).
The new S 1000 RR boasts
a ride-by-wire throttle system,
as well as Automatic Stability
Control (ASC) (banking sen-
sor optional), three-way ride
mode mapping; "Rain," "Sport,"
"Race" (two additional modes
are available: "Slick" and "User")
and BMW's ABS are all stan-
dard. The optional Dynamic
Traction Control (DTC) with
banking sensor has a precision
"ALL THE SPEED IN THE WORLD IS NOT
GOING TO DO YOU MUCH GOOD IF IT
COMES WITH QUIRKS AND UNCERTAINTIES,
BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING MORE
DISCONCERTING ON A MOTORCYCLE
THAN HAVING QUESTIONS AT SPEED."
Hidden beneath
the bodywork is an
abundance of rider
aiding technology.
