Our cover photo came from the Shamrock's Qualifier in California City, Cali-
fornia, where Carl Cranke left with the win… We tested the 1975 Husqvar-
na 250 CR motocrosser, which we said was basically a production works
bike "for experts only." It weighed 206 pounds and sold for $1,750… We
shared one person's experience of buying a motorcycle for the first time…
In the U.S. versus the World Speedway Series, Team USA claimed the latest
victory at Irwindale.
30 Years Ago March 27, 1985
Former 125 MX World Champion Gaston Rahier was pictured on the
cover riding his factory-backed BMW to victory at the Paris-Dakar Rally. We
covered the race and featured a profile on the Belgian, as well as Chuck
Stearns, the first American to start—and finish—the event. Stearns rode a
Yamaha TT600 to sixth place… We covered the opening round of the 250cc
World Motocross Grand Prix Series in South Africa, where Frenchman
Jacky Vimond claimed victory. Can-Am riders Geoff Ballard and Johnny
Martin went 1-2 at the National Hare Scrambles
opener in Florida.

Many winners from Daytona were featured on the cover of Cycle News 10
years ago, which included Supercross winner Chad Reed, Daytona 200
winner Matt Mladin, GNCC winner Doug Henry, short track winner Jake
Johnson, Formula Xtreme winner Miguel Duhamel, Supersports winner
Tommy Hayden, and Superstock winner Vincent Haskovec… Mike Laf-
ferty got top billing at the Alligator Enduro… David Pearson and Shane
Esposito teamed up to win the Laughlin Hare Scrambles.

Scott Russell crashed but still landed on the top step of the podium—as well as
on the cover of Cycle News—at the Daytona 200… Mike Kiedrowski captured
his first Supercross win of the year at Daytona. It was also his third straight vic-
tory at the legendary race… Brett Landes and Chris Carr were some of the big
winners on the dirt track at Daytona… Randy
Hawkins edged out Alan Gravitt for the win at
the Alligator enduro… Ty Davis outdueled Scott
Summers for the opening-round GNCC win.
