FLAT TRACK
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

A
sk any rider in the pits
their thoughts on the
Daytona Flat Track,
rookie or veteran, and you'll get
a multitude of opinions about the
limestone quarter-mile circuit lo-
cated just outside of Daytona In-
ternational Speedway's turn one.
Some love it, and some loathe it.
But one thing's for sure: no one
has a lock on it.
Take, for example, Stevie Bon-
sey, who was the only Suzuki in
the field. The Dodge Brothers/
Suzuki rider claimed a close and
exciting main event victory over
defending series champ Jared
Mees and Kenny Coolbeth Jr. on
Thursday night.
The following night, however,
Bonsey failed to even qualify for
the main event and had to use
his provisional "ticket" just to get
into the program. In the end, the
Californian finished 18
th
, while
Coolbeth on the Zanotti Racing
Honda totally ran away with the
25-lap final.
This year, the season open-
ing double header marked the
62
nd
consecutive season that
professional flat track racing has
taken place in Daytona Beach.
