Briefly...
Former points leader Ken Roczen
was still feeling the effects of the
crash he suffered in practice at At-
lanta I, where he suffered an injury
to his lower leg. He pulled out of
the third and final practice session
early and was never really up to his
usual pace all day. He was fourth in
qualifying, fourth in his heat race and
ended up a quiet eighth in the main
event. The RCH Soaring Eagle/
Jimmy Johns/Suzuki Factory Racing
rider has only been on the podium
twice in the last six races. He has
now fallen to third in the standings
and 43 points behind leader Ryan
Dungey.
The first back-to-back Atlanta Su-
percross rounds were basically an
experiment by the series organizers,
Feld Motorsports, and it is tough to
say if the attendance was near ev-
eryone's expectations. But if you go
by Feld's announced attendance,
51,023 for Atlanta I and 53,573 for
Atlanta II, you'd have to say it was
a success. Wicked storms earlier
in the week surely kept many fans
from the Northeast from attending,
but certainly the nearby Atlanta fans
had lots to smile about! Even a few
of NASCAR's greats were on hand
at Atlanta II to watch, since a NAS-
CAR event was being held the same
weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Some of those who attended were
NASCAR greats Richard Petty, Jeff
Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, who
was the race's grand marshal.
A whole new track featuring the
brand new over-under bridge and a
heap of sand provided a clean slate
for the riders, and the throwback
theme sparked a whole new vibe.
