son said. "I was like, 'Sweet!'
"But I knew how fast Cory is
in the trees. He caught me and I
held him off for a little while, then
I slid out in a little corner and he
put the power to the ground and
got by me. I could see him and
I knew we had a pretty big gap
on third, so I was really stoked.
I think this is my first-ever real
race in the trees.
"So I was really happy with
where I was at, then I smashed
my brake pedal—'accordioned' it
under the bike."
It took a little longer than
anticipated for mechanic Collin
Woolsey (who was expecting only
the usual gas pit) to pull a replace-
ment off a spare bike and install it
on Burson's Precision Concepts/
Motul/Klim 430 RR, dropping him
down the field, but he managed
to re-pass most of those riders to
claim an eventual seventh.
Up front, though, it was defi-
nitely Graffunder's day.
"There was some moisture
out there today, and I knew if I
could just get out front, it would
be basically my race to lose,"
the Kenda/FMF/O'Neal 300 XC
racer said. "So I pushed hard
early on to get out front—kind of
because of the dust—and then
once I was there, I was like,
