ably won't see me in the rest of
the series."
Virginia hare scrambles
champ Brad Bakken rounded
out the podium, riding a new
Yamaha YZ250FX for Motosport.
com/Am Pro Yamaha.
Bakken won two tests and
was sitting in second heading
into the final test, but couldn't
hold off the hard charging Rus-
sell and dropped to third in the
final results.
"To get on the podium at
the first race is always a good
thing," said Bakken. "I honestly
didn't know where I was going
to be at coming into the season
since there are so many fast
guys racing the series this year.
So I wasn't putting any pressure
on myself this year and I wasn't
really nervous, which I think
allowed me to ride better. I like
Briefly...
Groemm started to have problems
focusing and his team advised him
to stop.
ISDE standout and top Australian
off-roader Daniel Milner started the
Sumter race for Randy Hawkin's Am
Pro Yamaha team, and was doing
well in test one when he ran out of
gas. Unfortunately, someone forgot
to fill Milner's gas tank before the
race, and Hawkins took full respon-
sibility. "I messed up, I forgot to fill up
his bike and he ran out of gas, but we
took advantage of the situation and
we got in some valuable testing dur-
ing the rest of the day," said Hawkins.
"We probably wouldn't have tested
had be been in the running, so un-
fortunately Daniel was kind of the
guinea pig; it was my fault, but in the
end, the team will benefit from the
testing."
Russell Bobbitt is a big fan of south-
ern enduros, and he described the
course after the race. "The course
was tight and sandy and pretty rough
in most parts," said Bobbitt. "It was
definitely busy, and it kept you turn-
ing and twisting. You had to be on
your toes and it took a lot of focus not
to make a mistake. Overall, though,
the club did a good job."
Steward Baylor looked lean and
mean when he lined up on his row
to start the Sumter race. "I've been
training hard getting ready for this,
and most of the top guys have been
down at the house training with us
and I've been working hard," said
Baylor. "I've also been watching what
I eat and I've cut 26 pounds of body
fat and I've added seven pounds of
muscle. I'm in great shape and I can
definitely feel it on the bike."
