VOL. 52 ISSUE 3 JANUARY 20, 2015 P91
"I made a little mistake and it's
a shame because I was feeling
quite good with the pace, but I
was happy to get the win in the
Americana event, so it's not all
bad," the NSW resident said.
The Americana event, a series
of three lap sprint races with the
back left/right corner removed
to make one long oval circuit,
proved once again to be a major
hit with the crowd. The class
was made up of four rounds for
10 riders each, with three riders
eliminated from each race until
the quarter-finals, where four rid-
ers were eliminated. Finally, the
semi-final would see three more
riders eliminated until there were
just three left for the three-lap
final dash to flag.
In this discipline Herfoss
proved to be the man as the
three Americans faltered at
various points.
Herfoss took
his opening
heat race one,
followed by his
quarter-final,
semi-final and
overall final
encounters.
It would
prove to be
an all-Aussie
Americana
final, with Herfoss
leading home local dirt track
star Luke Richards (Honda) and
Bayliss.
"It feels great to get a win
against the Americans at their
own game," said Herfoss with a
smile. "But the TBC final is the
one we all want, so I'll be going
for it there." That challenge, as
we now know, came to nothing.
Wiles looked a man on form,
too, taking his heat and quarter-
final win before bowing out in the
semi. Halbert took 1-3 results
to also leave the Americana
event in the semis and Mees
didn't make it past the first round
thanks to his rear tire issues
mentioned before.
However, as Herfoss noted,
the TBC Final win was the one
all the riders wanted, and for that
Jared Mees went home $2500
richer for his efforts. In fact the
Americans more than got their
own back for the Americana
failure, with Wiles taking second
to stamp their authority on the
night. CN
