FIM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
VOL. 52 ISSUE 3 JANUARY 20, 2015 P43
"We get good starts when we need
to," Roczen said. "That's part of the
whole deal. Man it was a great main
event. Just kept it steady."
And while he was checking out it was
absolute bedlam behind him for those
first 10 laps.
The first to fall victim was BTO
Motorsport KTM's Andrew Short who
crashed out of the lead pack and took
Jason Anderson with him. The rookie
on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna had
nowhere to go but over Shorty's KTM
before hitting the deck.
A few laps later, AutoTrader/Toyota/
JGRMX Yamaha's Justin Barcia made
contact with Muscle Milk Honda's Cole
Seely, pushing Seely back from fifth to
ninth.
Then on lap eight, Seely's team-
mate Trey Canard ran into the back of
Discount Tires/TwoTwo Motorsports'
Chad Reed and took them both out
while the pair were battling for fourth.
What happened next created a con-
troversy that perhaps overshadowed
Roczen's big win. After both Reed and
Canard remounted to resume racing,
Reed made deliberate contact with
Canard as the Honda rider was putting
his goggles back on, which put Canard
into a Tuff Block and crashed again.
Reed was subsequently black flagged
and disqualified for what was viewed as
a retaliatory move.

Red Bull KTM's Ryan Dungey was also
able to avoid the carnage, but still got
caught up battling for position while
Roczen was checking out. It was a gap
that Dungey was unable to overcome to
challenge his former teammate for the
win.
