WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VOL. 52 ISSUE 2 JANUARY 13, 2015 P41 Briefly... After finishing fourth in the 450 main, Weston Peick revealed the next day via Instagram that he suffered a bro- ken bone in his foot when he cased a jump three laps from the end of the race that allowed Ryan Dungey to pass him. Peick said that he is going to have the foot examined further. It is not yet known if he'll be able to ride the next round at Anaheim II or not. Ken Roczen got off to another good start in the main, getting away in sec- ond behind Eli Tomac before quickly passing for the lead. After the race, the Soaring Eagle/RCH/Jimmy Johns Suzuki rider talked about his starts. "It's fun to finally get my starts dialed," said Roczen. "I think the Su- zuki really suits me in that regard; I can get all the power to the ground." The Phoenix track is always a con- cern for the riders as it is usually hard and pretty dry, however, Roczen thought this year's course was good. "It was super tacky, but it had a few slick spots," said Roczen. "Usually Phoenix gets pretty hard. It was defi- nitely different from usual, but it was good to finally have a more difficult track." One of the places that Eli Tomac was gaining time on Ken Roczen was on the Dragon Back near the finish line. "For me, it [the Dragon Back] was just about carrying my front wheel over them, I was literally just 'manualing' the thing," said Tomac. "This was a different style Dragon Back, some of them you have to skim up, they are really steep and kind of gnarly, but this one was mel- low enough, you could just float the front end up it." HE RESPONDED AT PHOENIX WITH AN IMPRESSIVE WIN OF HIS OWN, THE FIRST OF HIS CAREER. TOMAC ANSWERS BACK STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAN MOORE I n light of Ken Roczen's dominant win last week at the opening round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Anaheim, California, when the RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John's factory Suzuki rider passed Eli Tomac in turn three of this weekend's round in Phoenix and then squirted off to a quick lead, it was reasonable to think that this year was going to be a Roczen runaway; a one-rider blowout. Eli Tomac, however, was having none of that, and changed many people's minds by running down the German transplant to take his first-ever 450 Eli Tomac was excited, not to mention a little relieved, to capture his first ever Supercross win.
