40 Years Ago January 14, 1975
The first issue of Cycle News of 1975 featured a chilly A.C. Bakken on the
cover. The photo was taken by future CN editor Dale Brown at the DRA 20
Mule Team 200 desert race in California City, California, where the snow
rarely falls. Bakken teamed up with Mitch Mayes to claim the win… We fea-
tured a road test on what we said was a British-feeling" Laverda 750 parallel
twin. Suggested retail price was $2863… We
reported that Jimmy Weinert was making the
move from Kawasaki to Yamaha.
30 Years Ago January 16, 1985
Two-time AMA National Enduro Champion Terry Cunningham was pictured
on the cover of the first issue of the year in 1985. Cunningham was featured
in an interview… We were on hand to cover the first round of the CMC
Golden State MX Series in Madera, California, where Erik Kehoe, Ron Le-
chien and Broc Glover came away with the 125, 250 and 500cc class wins,
respectively… Our coverage of the Florida Winter Olympics was featured
in issue one, and it was Hank Moree who
grabbed the headlines.

A casual James Stewart was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 10 years
ago. We sat down and chatted with the 19-year-old superstar about the
upcoming Supercross Series and his debut in the premier 250cc class…
We tested both the Kawasaki ZX-6R and the Honda CR250R motocrosser…
We were there when the Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki Team made its
debut at the Daytona tire test… Remember the Custom Chrome HR3 V? We
took a spin on the unique kit bike.

Freddie Spencer made front-page news by impressing everyone at the
Daytona tire test on his first outing on the Fast By Feracci Ducati… Our first
issue of 1995 featured our 250cc Motocross Shootout. And the winner? The
Yamaha YZ250… We took a spin on Chris Carr's Harley-Davidson VR1000
Superbike… We interviewed young road racer Colin Edwards… We covered
the Bologna Supercross where Steve Lam-
son came away with the big win. He won
both nights of racing over Larry Ward.
