The man of the night putting
the young guys to shame was
BTO Motorsport KTM's Andrew
Short, who instead of letting the
"it's a young guy's sport" get to
him has embraced that notion
with a nothing-to-lose, and a
might-as-well-have-fun attitude.
Perhaps fun is not only the en
vogue secret to success, but the
fountain of youth as the 32-year
old was riding in top form, win-
ning his heat race over the young
Roczen and finishing fifth against
a stacked field of youngsters.
Battling for sixth was a pair of
JGR Yamahas—Justin Barcia and
Weston Peick. Although Peick
was ahead most of the race,
Barcia one-upped his teammate
on the last lap. Roczen's team-
mate Broc Tickle finished eighth,
a worthy finish in his return from
a near career-ending injury at
last year's Toronto Supercross.
Rounding out the top 10 was
Motoconcepts/SmartTop's Mike
Alessi and TwoTwo Motorsport's
Chad Reed.
Monster Energy Kawasaki's
Davi Millsaps crashed out of
fourth on lap five, remounted and
crashed a second time in the
sand section, this time involving
Muscle Milk Honda's Cole Seely.
Millsaps remounted again and
finished 19
th
to earn two cham-
pionship points, while his team-
mate Wil Hahn unfortunately was
sidelined from an injury suffered
in practice.
GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac
also had a rough night with two
crashes in the main and took
home one point with 20
th
.
Nelson's Night
There's always a first time for ev-
erything. And for Jessy Nelson,
there's no way better to start the
new year than your first Super-
cross win.
"It's huge! It's so surreal," Nel-
son said about the win. "It's awe-
some just to finally get it out of the
way and get one for the team. I got
Trey Canard (41) congratulates
Roczen (94) before they head off to
the podium with Anderson (21).
