INTERVIEW 2014 ROCKY MOUNTAIN ATV/MC WORLD OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES CHAMPION P214 to get on the podium at Glen Helen. I was able to salvage points–I think I only lost two points to Rob- by (Bell). After that it just came down to keeping the bike together at the final round in Primm (Nevada) to win the championship." Sutherlin put icing on the cake of a champion- ship-winning year with a stellar performance at the Six Days, where he topped the overall club stand- ings and earned an individual gold. "It was good for me; it was a good learning ex- perience. I enjoyed going down there and being able to win the club competition. I actually cracked a couple ribs on day three, so they had to shoot me up a little bit–some medicine so I could en- dure the pain and finish the last three days. But overall, it was good for me. The Wellard guys are awesome and they're very passionate about win- ing the club competition. They're a great group of guys and it was really cool to be a part of it all." THE ONE THING Sutherlin's accomplishments in 2014 are impres- sive no matter how you look at it. Earning a major championship as a privateer is always a tall order, but did we mention he did this all with a toddler in tow? Gary Sutherlin is a single father. No shared cus- tody here–Gary is it–mom and dad to three-year-old Emery. Together they manage to make it work. It's not easy being a single parent, but don't feel sorry for Sutherlin. He's the first to tell you how much he treasures fatherhood. "You know what, it's awesome," Sutherlin said. "Honestly, it's a lot of work. It's overwhelming at times, but I wouldn't change it for anything. She keeps me grounded and keeps me focused." Emery travels just about everywhere with her dad, which obviously includes spending a lot of time at the races. Having a three-year-old at an all-day race event might sound like a nightmare to some, but young Emery is quite a natural. "I think she's been at every single race this year," Sutherlin said. "For the most part, she's good at the races. And racing is a huge family community, so she has a lot of fun. She rides to the starting line with me. In addition to the WORCS title, Sutherlin also took the overall club standings and earned an individual gold at ISDE.
