INTERVIEW P202 2014 SPEEDWAY WORLD CHAMPION GREG HANCOCK T he year was 1937 and 90,000 fans filled Lon- don's cavernous Wem- bley Stadium to watch the Speedway World Champi- onship. That day – and in an example of total domination – Americans Jack Milne, Wilbur Lamoreauz and Cordy Milner swept the podium in the UK, going one, two and three, re- spectively. That was a long time ago. Seventy-seven years ago to be precise about it. On October 11 another Yan- kee made global Speedway history when 44 year-old Greg Hancock powered to the third FIM Speedway World Cham- pionship of his career inside Poland's Marian Rose Mo- toarena. The oldest rider to ever win the title, Hancock's tri- umph was yet another stop on the journey that has been his 26-year Transatlantic Speed- way career. Born and raised in Southern California, "Herbie" came to the fore during the twi- light of the American Speed- way boom of the early-to-mid 1980s. His dream of following WITH HIS THIRD TITLE AT 44, GREG HANCOCK SHOWS NO SIGNS OF SLOWING DOWN. BY ERIC JOHNSON | PHOTOS COURTESY OF MONSTER ENERGY
