VOL. 51 ISSUE 50 DECEMBER 16, 2014 P129
got a win and was right in there in
the points race. Even the young
guns were going hard this year
and mixing things up. And Taddy,
he's a strong, phenomenal rider
and he has five championships to
prove that. He didn't give an inch
this year.
How have you progressed
since you started in the sport
in 2010?
From when I started, I've
learned a lot. When I started, I
just bought a dirt bike and did it
for fun. When I signed with Beta
they signed Johnny Murphree,
an old dirt tracker, to help me,
and I actually learned what train-
ing was. It's not like you're going
100% all the time in trials. You're
spending a lot of time just trail rid-
ing on the loop and then maybe a
minute of the time at 100% in the
sections, so I had a lot to learn.
Johnny got me on a new training
regiment, some really high inten-
sity stuff. I also had to get some
aggression going on the dirt bike.
I had to learn to pass and I knew
I was slow in the corners, so I
went and did a lot of homework.
I rode of lot a moto over the last
few years, and I'm still not that
fast at moto, but now I'm making
up a lot of ground in between the
obstacles.
This year's courses varied
from venue to venue. Some
were very technical while oth-
ers were much faster. How did
those differences affect the
results at each race?
It's EnduroCross, so you can't
expect the same thing week
in and week out. The first race
in Vegas was really tough and
I came in really prepared and I
think everyone else was expect-
ing a course that was a little eas-
ier and a little faster, and I think
it favored me and that was my
biggest win of the year. It was
big to get that first win under my
belt. X-Games was faster and I
wasn't comfortable there all day.
I was hitting third gear on my
bike, and usually I never get out
of second. I just didn't have the
right stuff for that track. I was hav-
ing to shift a lot and on a normal
track I just stay in second for the
whole race. I was thrown off by
the track and I was really fortu-
nate to get the silver medal. The
next race in Atlanta, that track
got really tough. I think that race
was kind of a turning point, be-
cause even though I didn't win
the race I was able to catch and
gap Taddy and my confidence at
that point was at its highest ever.
At that point I knew I was capable
of winning the championship. For
the rest of the year I was pretty
consistent and each of the races
had their advantages and disad-
vantages for me, but I managed
to stay consistent.
At Ontario, the last race,
there was a water section
that some of the riders—Tay-
lor Robert and Mike Brown—
"I'M NOT RYAN VILLOPOTO SO I'M
NOT GETTING MILLION DOLLAR
CONTRACTS."
