P118 40 Years Ago December 17, 1974 High school motocross was the hot topic in our second-to-last issue of the year. We covered the Yamaha California State High School Champion- ship at Saddleback Park, and one of the top riders was Kearney High's Tommy Croft. Warren Reid won the 125cc Expert class for Bolsa Grande High School, and long-time Kawasaki race technician Rick Asch got on the podium for Canyon High… There was plenty of desert racing going on in Southern California and we covered them all… We also had a feature story on bicycle motocross racing. 30 Years Ago December 19, 1984 A photo of Wes Cooley in action at Riverside Raceway in California was on the cover to accompany our inside look feature on Cooley's very cool Yoshimura Suzuki Superbike… We were there to cover AMA/D-37's final desert race of the year, the Jackrabbit's 100, where Husky's Dan Ashcraft battled it out with Yamaha-mounted Ted Hunnicutt. Ashcraft came out on top with Hunnicutt taking second and Chris Crandall third… One of our story titles read: Unknown Texan Smokes Everybody at Willow Springs Superbike Final. That Texan was 20-year-old Kevin Schwantz. 10 Years Ago December 15, 2004 Ricky Carmichael was featured on the cover 10 years ago for winning the open- ing round of the THQ World Supercross Grand Prix Series in Toronto, Canada. It was Carmichael's first win on a Suzuki since joining the factory team a few months earlier. Nathan Ramsey won the 125cc class on the new KTM 250 four- stroke… Honda's Steve Hengeveld, Johnny Campbell and Kendal Norman won the SCORE Baja 1000… Ryan Villopoto dominated the Mini Os in Florida. Other big winners included Josh Lichtle, Matt Boni and Zach Osborne. Jeff Willoh was acknowledged as the overall winner until a scoring error showed up later, revealing that Neese had indeed won. Kevin Walker, Casey Johnson, Travis Pastrana, Er- nesto Fonseca and Brock Sellards were some of the other big winners… We covered the annual Barstow-to-Vegas dual sport ride… We also took a close-up look at the Muzzy Kawasaki ZXR750 Superbike that was ridden by Scott Russell.
