SCORE BAJA 1000 VOL. 51 ISSUE 46 NOVEMBER 18, 2014 P65 Briefly... As is often the case at a penin- sula run, a Trophy truck was the fastest vehicle. At this one, four trucks beat the fastest bike with the winning Ford of Rob MacCachren/Andy McMillan/ Jason Voss running an astound- ing 22:31:28 for a 56.64 MPH average speed. By comparison, the winning Kawasaki averaged 52.36 MPH. At 1275 miles, this year's race was the longest Baja 1000 when starting in Ensenada and finish- ing in La Paz. Only the Baja 2000 – at 1754 miles from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas – was longer, and had an 80-hour time limit. One thing that concerned quite a few participants was the flurry of course changes and updates in the days leading up to the race, many of them including new Vir- tual Check Points (VCPs). Just before the drivers/riders meet- ing the night before the race, the count was 18 revisions, accord- ing to Bob Bell of Precision Con- cepts. Tony Gera, who has dominated the SCORE Ironman class this year, decided to take a DNF in this one when he found out his family was involved in a single-car accident. Reportedly, a tire blew in their chase van and it rolled, ejecting the passengers. Fortu- nately, it appears that there were no injuries beyond some broken bones.
