STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN GASSO
I
t was the Parts Unlimited OMA Na-
tional Series season finale and the
39th running of the Moose Run, the
event that started life as "America's
toughest race." Two laps of this year's
40-mile loop would test every skill an
off-road motorcycle racer possessed,
as it does every year.
Although the degree of difficulty
has mellowed somewhat over the de-
cades, the Moose Run is still regard-
ed as a very challenging race and is
never taken lightly by the riders. Ev-
erything from fresh single-track trail
to wide-open stretches of corn and
soybean fields challenge the racers.
Small logs throughout the trail system
also kept the riders on their guard, es-
pecially one particular spot that was a
favorite of the spectators. It was affec-
tionately known as "The Log," which
made things difficult for many of the
less-seasoned racers. This year Rus-
sell Bobbitt, on the FMF Moose Rac-
ing/Scott Husqvarna, overcame all of
the obstacles and captured the victory
at the venerable event that takes place
in Fenton, Illinois, just outside race
promoter Bill Gusse's back door.
