CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "In all the years of dirt track racing we have never seen a rule change to make the other brands "more competitive." Cross-Rutted Kudos to Jean Turner on "The Seven Deadly Sins" (Cross- Rutted, Issue 42, October 21) of trail riding. After 30 years of membership in local trail riding clubs I found myself applying names of people I have known and ridden with through the years to each of the categories. She was definitely right on the money with the comment that you can find out more about a person in one day of trail riding than you can in nearly any other circumstance. It does bring out their true char- acter. Thanks, Jean. Richard T. Manning Lubbock, TX Flat Track Update What a great job on the dirt track update (Archives, Issue 42, October 21). I enjoyed all the information. I have been a dirt track fan since 1958 - back then there were several brands and our group went with the English brands. The rules were always in favor of Harley-David- son! We lived with it. When the English brands faded, the Japanese bikes stepped up and gave us a brand to cheer for. Again, when the racing became close there were rule changes in favor of Harley. And then all that was racing was HD so we stopped going to the races (one brand, one set of race fans). Then, thanks to Bill Werner, we saw the new team with a 650cc Kawasaki. When they started to win a few it didn't take long for the rule changes. When that didn't work… well, let's just throw the black flag. In all the years of dirt track racing we have never seen a rule change to make the other brands "more competitive." As long as AMA is in bed with Harley there will never be a number-one plate on any other brand. Mel Joos Via the Internet Flat Track Update II I've noticed previously that Cycle News had only given Henry Wiles credit for one Grand National Championship victory this season when in fact he won the Castle Rock and Peoria TT's. The flat track review article again wrongly states that Henry had only one victory this season and led 37 laps total. This also brings into question if 37 laps is the cor- rect number of laps Henry led, as this seems very low as the number for third most laps led. Bob Mundy Via the Internet This is taken directly from Lar- ry Lawrence's story… "There were six different Grand National winners this year. Smith led the way with five victories; Kenny Coolbeth had four, followed by two each for Henry Wiles and Jared Mees. Brad Baker and Briar Bauman scored a win apiece.".. Editor On Any Sunday Kudos to Dana Brown for the release of his "On Any Sunday - The Next Chapter." I absolutely believe that the general public has no idea of just how diffi- cult it is to (1) produce a major motion picture; and (2) get it released to the world. While I've not seen it yet I look forward to sitting in the au- dience and being blown away! Congratulations, Dana. And a special congrats to Kit Palmer for his new position as editor of Cycle News. I've known Kit for 40 years and he's a hell of a writer. Knock 'em alive, Kit! Larry "Supermouth" Huffman Via the Internet Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com. Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News. Letters should not exceed 150 words and are subject to editing. Anonymous letters won't be considered for publication and each letter should contain the writer's name, address and daytime phone number… Editor P16
