An illustration of Gary Scott was featured on the cover 40 years ago to ac-
company our in-depth interview with the flat track vice champion… We were
one of the 1600 who turned out for the Hook & Ladder Enduro in California
City… Suzuki's Gerrit Wolsink won the Trans-AMA round that was held in
Orlando, Florida. Roger DeCoster DNF'd and Marty Smith won the 250cc
class… We tested the BMW R90. We said
it might be the last of the great classics.

We put the Can-Am 175cc ASE through the wringer—as well as through a
stream—for our riding impression of the midsize off-roader… The Superbik-
ers returned to Carlsbad Raceway for the sixth time and Kent Howerton
pulled off the "surprise" win—the second time for him—ahead of Rick
Johnson… Indian Dunes hosted round nine of the CMC Trans-Cal Series.
Johnny O'Mara won both 125 and 250cc Pro classes, while Jim Holley
took command of the 500cc division… Ted Boody won the Springfield
Mile, but Ricky Graham edged Bubba Shobert by one point for the title.

450 was pictured in action on the front page… We took a close look at the
all-new 2005 Suzuki GSX-R1000… We chatted with Wayne Rainey and
got his thoughts on the just concluded MotoGP Series and its latest cham-
pion Valentino Rossi…. The WORCS Series stopped at Glen Helen Raceway
where Ty Davis claimed another win… We interviewed MX2 World Champion
Ben Townley… The Formula USA Series concluded at Homestead.

The cover theme was "First Rides" in our latest issue 20 years ago. We
tested some of the most current dirt bikes from Suzuki, Yamaha and Husa-
berg… We covered the Ghost Riders National Enduro that took place in the
Lucerne Valley desert, where Ty Davis emerged with the win… The GNCC
Series visited High Point Raceway in Pennsylvania where Scott Plessinger
edged out Fred Andrews for the overall victory.
