XC1 PODIUM BATTLE
In just his second race back from injury, Factory FMF/
KTM's Charlie Mullins grabbed the early lead at Ironman,
with Rockstar Energy/WMR KTM's Ryan Sipes following
close behind. The KTM duo swapped back and forth in
the first couple laps but Sipes, who was on a mission from
the beginning, officially led the first two-and-a-half laps of
the race until Russell charged through the top-five to take
the point. Russell moved into the lead on lap three and im-
mediately began to gap the field, but the battle for second
place lasted for the duration of the 3-hour race. Mullins
was part of the battle for about an hour, but began to fade
as he dealt with issues on one of his injured wrists.
