backed Beta rider got around
Mike Brown to secure the early
lead and began to pull away from
the field. A flurry of crashes and
mishaps unfolded behind Webb,
allowing him to stretch his lead.
But once again, Webb had a near
15-second lead, and once again,
it unraveled.
"I really got in a nice groove
there and did a lot of big moves
the first couple laps and gapped
those guys," Webb said. "I had a
nice, huge cushion and I think I
just went on cruise control a little
bit too much and let off my pace.
Webb stayed steady, but
steadily lost ground as he led the
first nine laps of the main. Once
Robert and Haaker had closed
in, disaster struck.
"Brown made a mistake in the
rocks when I came up on him
and I went off my main line,"
Webb explained. "His front end
went down and there was noth-
ing I could really do. I tipped
over and bent the hell out of
my clutch lever. I couldn't even
reach it when I got up so I had to
spend a lot of time bending it up
just to get out of the rocks. I got
