P104 40 Years Ago October 22, 1974 Pictured on the front page were Rex Beauchamp and Rick Hocking caught in action while dicing for the lead at the Ascot Half-Mile National. Hocking went on to win. Gene Romero was also pictured on the cover to accompany our interview with the flat track star… Bob Balentine blew everybody away at the Cal City Grand Prix… MX World Champion Heikki Mikkola was the big winner at the Honda Hills round of the Trans- AMA Series in Linnville, Ohio. The top-finish- ing American was Jim Pomeroy in third. 10 Years Ago October 20, 2004 Mat Mladin and Miguel Duhamel made front-page news—Mladin for clinch- ing his fifth AMA Superbike title and Duhamel for winning the double at VIR. Tommy Hayden also took the Supersport title… We traveled to Virginia to cover the AMA Supermoto rounds where Doug Henry and Kurt Nicoll took the big wins… Ricky Carmichael made his Suzuki debut at the U.S. Open of Super- cross in Las Vegas. RC was fast but slowed by a mechanical problem; Chad Reed won both nights… Greg Hancock won his fifth U.S. Speedway title. We also went trail riding in Colorado with the folks from Moose Racing and told you all about our adven- ture… Wil Davis took a surprising win at the Pomona Half Mile… It was a wet one at Donnington Park but that didn't bother Scott Russell who won both legs of the World Superbike Championship round… Danny Hamel won the National Hare & Hound that was in Gorman, California. LOOKING BACK 30 Years Ago October 24, 1984 The latest Kawasaki Ninja GPz600 made front-page news 30 years ago. We also gave space on the cover to Honda's new 1100 Shadow we dubbed "Harley Killer"… The CMC Trans-Cal Series made a night stop at the Orange Show Stadium in San Bernardino, California. Johnny O'Mara won the 250 class, Eddie Warren the 125s, and Mike Fisher the 500s. Eddie Hicks won the Mini Expert class… Larry Roeseler and Kurt Pfeiffer teamed up to win the HDRA Frontier 500 in Nevada… We cov- ered the 59 th ISDE in Holland; the hosts won.
