We were excited to present the first of six installments of Gary Baily's book
"How To Win Motocross." One of his first points? "If you are following, you
are not racing."… The final round of the World Championship Road Race
Series played out in Spain; the event was marred by the death of a fireman
who was struck by a racer on the track while trying to aid a fallen rider…
Roger DeCoster won the opening round
of the Trans-AMA MX Series at Unadilla.
Second was Gerrit Wolsink.

LOOKING BACK
20 Years Ago October 12, 1994
Our feature story was a review of the 1994 National MX Championship… We
also paid tribute to Jeff Stanton who had recently—and somewhat quietly—an-
nounced his retirement from professional racing… We also had a report on the
battle for sanctioning rights for the upcoming AMA Supercross Series. At the
time, the AMA was battling it out with new sanctioning body—AIR (American In-
ternational Racing) formed by Bill West and Roy Janson. We also interviewed
then AMA vice president Tom Mueller who
was also facing similar problems in road racing.

Ricky Carmichael was featured aboard his new Suzuki RM250 following
his switch from Team Honda to Suzuki. We interviewed the recently crowned

for winning the World Superbike Championship… We reported the death of
French off-road star and three-time Dakar Rally winner Richard Sainct who
was killed while competing in the Pharaoh's Rally in Egypt… The factory
Suzuki Motocross Racing Team announced a new title sponsor—Makita…
Belgium won the Motocross des Nations in Holland; USA did not compete.
