VOL. 51 ISSUE 37 SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 P71 2.562-second margin of victory and that was after backing off in the final lap. He had the lead up to 4.5 seconds with four laps to go before cooling his pace. "Ending the season with a win is amazing," Gagne said. "Dane [Westby] and Garrett [Gerloff] and those guys were really haulin', and I could see on my pit board that I needed to turn it up a little bit. So that's what I did, and I was able to build up a little bit of lead. I'm glad it worked out for me and my team, not only today, but all sea- son long." Second was Gerloff, who won out in a great fight for the posi- tion with Dane Westby and Jake Lewis. It matched the best result of the season for Gerloff and gave him his third podium of the season. "It's good to be on the podium," Gerloff said. "That was a fun race, to be in that group with Dane. I was glad to get at the front of those guys and finish second. The year didn't go quite the way I'd hoped, but I have to thank my Y.E.S./Mon- ster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team for giving me an awesome R6 all season long." At one point Westby appeared to be signaling to Lewis for them to try to work together to chase down Gagne. But no matter how hard Westby and Lewis tried to use their combined draft to their advantage Gagne seemed to be able to respond and raise his pace whenever the gap closed. He was managing the race well from the lead. In the closing laps while Gagne continued to build on his lead, it was Gerloff who moved up to pass both Lewis and Westby for second. The trio battled all the way to the flag with Gerloff taking the runner-up spot from Westby and Lewis. JD Beach finished fifth, some 20 seconds behind the Westby- Lewis battle. "This is not one of my favorite tracks to say the least," Beach said afterwards. Eslick, somewhat surprisingly, might catch up." Gillim made a run and nearly won the race, finishing just .041 of a sec- ond back, in spite of really having no business getting up there and risking the battle with Dominguez. "I'd rather fight my hardest and crash away the championship than give away a race. That's how I'd rather have it. The strategy was to win. It always is," said Gillim. "The first few laps, I was pushing as hard as I could. We were having a really good battle. It's insane the support I have gotten and I can't thank everyone enough." Wyatt Farris topped Kaleb De Key- rel (De Keyrel Racing) for third. Miller, Jr. held off Corey Alexander to round out the top five. Briefly... very happy with the bike, with the team and the organization. I'm looking forward to coming back next year." Mid-Ohio winner Jason DiSalvo suf- fered a big crash in Saturday's DSB race. "The track was drying at that point and I think I was two laps too early to go through that last turn at that pace," DiSalvo said. "The back end stepped out and spit me over the top and I had the pleasure of ex- periencing a fourth-gear highside. I got banged up pretty good. I walked off under my own power, went to he medical center and they recom- mended I go to the hospital for some X-rays on my lower back. The guys rebuilt the bike. They did a great job. I think the shock was the only thing salvageable." DiSalvo came back to finish eighth in Sunday's DSB final on his Castrol Triumph, holding off Shane Narbonne and Kyle Wyman. Steve Rapp missed the final Day- tona Sportbike rounds after suffering a practice crash on the D&D Cycles/ Castrol Triumph. "I crashed the bike in the morning on the first day and there were so many issues and bro- ken stuff it just wasn't ready," Rapp explained. Saturday's rain race was held in miserable conditions, but it wasn't so miserable for Dane Westby (00), who won the race over Gagne (8) and Jake Zemke (98).
