was given a 20-second time pen-
alty and dropped to second.
Hayes was not thrilled with the
news, but his disappointment
was padded by the fact that he'd
clinched the 2014 AMA Superbike
title after Saturday's race - in spite
of being dropped to second.
Larry Pegram was a surprising
third on his Foremost Insurance
EBR, over a minute-and-a-half
back from the leaders. It was the
first podium for Pegram on the
season and one he was proud
of, especially considering he ran
a good portion of the race with-
out traction control.
"I realized that I had shut my
traction control off and that's why
I was having so much trouble,"
Pegram said. "In one of those
little mishaps my hand must have
hit the button and shut it off."
Pegram was the last rider on
the lead lap. Floridian Sean Dw-
yer finished fourth on his Vicious
Cycle Racing Suzuki, his best-
career result. Beaubier came
back from his fall to finish fifth.
Sunday dawned crisp and sun-
ny and it was Hayes getting out
to the early lead in the season
finale. Three laps in he made a
rare riding error.
"It was brain fade, I don't have
a good excuse for it," Hayes said
of his slip. "I was thinking about
something else when I realized I
was already past my brake marker
and past the cones in turn one."
