A photo of Carl Cranke changing a tire during the ISDT in Czechoslovakia was
on the cover to accompany our report of the event. It was no surprise that
the Czech team took the gold medal, while Team USA finished a respectable
fourth… Anders Michanek claimed the World Speedway Championship with
a perfect score in Sweden… We tested the Yamaha's "low-budget racer," the
RD200 B… We talked about politics in MX GP
racing and how it might've cost Jaroslov Falta
his first 250 World Motocross title.

We tested the French-built Moto Martin chassis kit for the six-cylinder
CBX Honda and featured it in action at Willow Springs on the cover… We
traveled to Finland to cover the Motocross des Nations, where Team USA
returned with another win. The squad was made up of Jeff Ward, David
Bailey, Johnny O'Mara and Rick Johnson… Bubba Shobert won the San
Jose Mile… The AMA Superbike Series stopped at Willow Springs where
Fred Merkel came out on top… Terry Cunningham won the Rattlesnake
100 National Enduro in Iowa.

"Mr. Perfect" Ricky Carmichael was featured on the cover 20 years ago
after he swept both 250 motos at Glen Helen Raceway, as well as the
previous 22 motos in the outdoor National MX Championship. It was also
Carmichael's last ride on a Honda before moving on to Suzuki… In Ireland,
Stefan Everts and Ben Townley clinched World MX titles in the MX1 and
MX2 classes… Geoff Aaron sewed up his eighth Trials National Champi-
onship in Vermont… In Missouri, Shane Watts won the OMA round and
closed in on series leader Jimmy Jarrett.
