An illustration of a "sportsman rider" was featured on the cover 40 years ago…
We printed photos and reported on Evel Knievel's failed attempt to jump the
Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho… Just down the road, Evel Knievel
hosted a motocross race with a $100,000 purse, the largest ever. Pierre Kars-
makers, Marty Tripes and Marty Smith were some of the big money makers
that day… Hank Scott edged out Rex Beau-
champ for the big win at the Syracuse Mile… We
interviewed AMA President Terry Tierman.
30 Years Ago September 19, 1984
Honda's David Bailey was pictured in all his glory on the cover of Cycle
News 30 years to accompany our interview with the recently crowned 500cc
National Motocross and Grand National Motocross Champion… It was a battle
to the finish, and we were there to cover Bubba Shobert's win at the Syra-
cuse Mile… Scott Head wrapped up the AMA/NATC Observed Trials National
Championship… Belgian Andre Malherbe sewed up his third 500cc World
Motocross Championship in Italy… We chatted with 250cc National MX Cham-
pion Rick Johnson.

"Winners" was the theme in Cycle News 10 years ago, and there were lots of
them over the Labor Day Weekend, and we put them all on the cover… One of
those winners was Ricky Carmichael who clinched his fifth 250cc Motocross
title at Steel City. James Stewart won the 125cc class becoming the win-
ningest rider of all-time in the class… The AMA announced that the U.S. would
not be sending a team to the Motocross des Nations in Holland, citing cost…
Valentino Rossi won again in Portugal... Chris Carr won the Springfield Mile.
20 Years Ago September 14, 1994
Our ISDE Special Issue featured a preview of the Tulsa Six Days… We reported
that Greg Albertyn had signed a two-year contract with the Suzuki factory
motocross team… We also announced that Roger Edmondson was going to in-
troduce a new road race series called the Championship Cup Series… Robbie
Reynard might have won the race at Steel City but Honda/1-800-COLLECT's
Doug Henry won the 125cc MX National Championship for the second year in a
row… Scott Russell won both legs at the World
Championship Road Race in Japan.
