P104 40 Years Ago September 10, 1974 We got your attention with a young model aboard our 125cc Puch test bike that was featured on the cover 40 years ago… The 1974 National MX Series came to a conclusion on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans, where Gary Jones (250cc) and Jimmy Weinert (500cc) wrapped up the titles. Neither rider won that day; instead, it was Kent Howerton and Gary Semis pulling off the victories… Kenny Roberts won at Talledega… No records were broken at the 26 th Bonneville Speed Nationals. 30 Years Ago September 8, 1984 Cycle News associate editor Kit Palmer took a spin on Rick Johnson's cham- pionship-winning Yamaha YZ250 motocrosser that was pictured in action on the cover 30 years ago… We were at Brainerd and covered Mike Baldwin's Formula One Championship-winning ride… We covered the Loretta Lynn's Amateur MX; some of the big winners were Eddie Hicks, Eddie Warren, Chad (aka Trampas) Parker, Shawn Kalos, Bader Manneh and Jimmy Button… Davey Durrelle doubled up at the Black Hills Flat Track at Sturgis… Suzuki announced its intent to take over the 750 high-performance street mar- ket with a bike called the GSX-R750. 10 Years Ago September 8, 2004 Supermoto made the cover 10 years ago with double winners Doug Henry and Jeff Ward getting it done in Colorado… French riders Mickael Pichon (MX1) and Mickael Maschio (MX2) were the big winners at the Grand Prix of Europe MX in Germany… We covered Johnny Murphree's first win of 2004 at the Sadalia Half Mile… Cycle News interviewed dirt tracker Jared Mees.. We covered the Legends of Motocross Race in Namur, Belgium. Graham Noyce, Roger DeCoster and Brad Lackey were just some of the big names that participated.
