and I was able to put it on the
box."
Baker, meanwhile, had a cer-
tain podium taken away when his
factory Harley-Davidson broke on
the final lap. He had just enough
momentum, with a few good leg
paddles, to roll powerless across
the finish line in fourth. The fans
gave him a huge cheer when he
made it to the line.
Last year's Mega Mile winner
Mees somehow nursed his bike
with a bad transmission home to
fifth. He looked relieved after-
wards to score that result, saying
it could have, maybe even should
have, been worse.
Brandon Robinson, who was
on the podium in this race last
year, didn't feel comfortable rac-
ing on the Mega Mile all day, yet
ran a conservative race and man-
aged a solid sixth. Higgins ran as
high as second in the opening of
the race, but dropped to seventh
at the finish. Kenny Coolbeth Jr.,
was eighth on the Zanotti Rac-
ing Harley-Davidson and lost
more ground to Smith, Mees and
Johnson in the standings. Peoria
winner and last year's Mega Mile
runner up Henry Wiles took ninth
and Shawn Baer scored his sec-
ond top-10 finish of the season in
10th.
Next Sunday the series moves
to the tradition-filled Labor Day
Springfield Mile. CN
