rider who dropped back with
goggle issues. He rallied to finish
fourth. Metcalfe, sans goggles,
rounded out the top five.
While the conditions made for
early exits for many, other riders
showed perseverance to score
their best moto finishes of the sea-
son. That included riders like Mat-
thew Goerke who was sixth on the
BTO Sports KTM and the semi-re-
tired Ryan Sipes who was 10th on
his Rockstar/WMR KTM. It would
get even better for fill-in rider Sipes
in the second moto—much better.
Briefly...
he'd never been to a motocross race
before. "We're excited to have the
event here and the community has
done a great job this year and we'll
do even better next year."
Legendary vet racer Gary Peak was
honored at the event. Over the years
Peak, 68, from nearby Marshall, Il-
linois, has won numerous state and
national vet and masters motocross
titles. "When I was a young man mo-
tocross hadn't started around here
yet," Peak said. "I didn't take up the
sport until later in life. I was too old to
race pro. I always wanted to ride pro
and one year I was at Kenworthy's in
Ohio, and Duke Finch [former AMA
Motocross Director] said, "I'm going
to sign you up right now." So I got
to ride practice and qualifiers. Of
course I didn't do good in anything,
but I had a blast out there riding with
the pros for one day. I was probably
50 at that point."
Trey Canard made good use of his
second-moto holeshot and ran off
with the win for second overall.
