MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP, PRESENTED BY AMSOIL
VOL. 51 ISSUE 32 AUGUST 12, 2014 P85
Briefly...
For the fourth straight year, the re-
cipient of AMA Motocross Horizon
Award has gone to a rider from the
Amsoil/Factory Connection ama-
teur program, the latest, of course,
being RJ Hampshire. Before Hamp-
shire it was Matt Bisceglia (2013),
Zach Bell (2012) and Justin Bogle
(2011). The last non-Honda Horizon
winner was Kawasaki Team Green's
Jason Anderson in 2010.
Loretta Lynn's isn't all about the kids.
Older riders were honored as well.
This year, the AMA Motocross Vet/
Senior rider Award, which acknowl-
edges an outstanding rider over
the age of 30, went to double-class
winner John Grewe. The Kawasaki
racer from Michigan won both the
Senior 40+ and Senior 45+ National
Championships.
Speaking of the "old" guys, they
put on a good show as well,
with KTM rider Ricky Renner
sweeping the Junior 25+ class
over Robbie Reynard and James
Povolny. Reynard, however, was
not denied a title, as he too cleaned
house in the Vet 35+ division over
Povolny and Tony LoRusso. MX
World Champion Trampas Parker
won a moto in the Senior 45+, which
ultimately went to Grewe. Parker
ended up second overall ahead of
Barry Carsten, Michael Treadwell
and Dag Boyesen. In the Masters
50+ class, Earl May and former
MX World and GNCC Champion
Rodney Smith went at it, with May
coming out on top with 1-1-2 moto fin-
ishes. Smith went 2-2-1 for second.

G
reat weather and a guy from Florida were the talk of the Loret-
ta Lynn Ranch at this year's 33
rd
running of the AMA Amateur
Motocross Championship, better known simply as "Loretta's."
Typically, the top amateur motocrossers from all across the U.S.
come to Tennessee and the Loretta Lynn Ranch for the AMA Amateur
Motocross Championship prepared for a week of hot, humid and sti-
fling weather conditions. This year, however, Mother Nature felt a little
compassion and provided a week of pleasant weather conditions for
the racers, their families and crews. And there was an additional bo-
nus—no rain! As a result, the racing action was a bit more intense and
a little closer than usual.
The main question that Loretta's answers every year is: Who is this
year's top amateur motocrosser? (This rider is also usually the top ama-
teur-to-pro graduate, like Matt Bisceglia was last year and Zach Bell the
year before that.) Sometimes, that question is up for debate, but not this
year—it was Florida's RJ Hampshire, who never lost a moto.
