IN THE WIND P30 lytic converter specialist, ACAT Global, with the aim of proving its motorcycle products in the most challenging conditions. The Ninja has been modified by Erion Rac- ing and will be ridden by Cathy Butler. Butler has competed at Bonn- eville for many years and already holds several records. This year, she is aiming to get her name in the record books again on the ZX-10R. "The rules dictate that any part of the motorcycle that can be seen must be stock," explained Erion Racing President Kevin Erion. "We can remove the mir- rors and turn signals, as well as the rear footpegs, provided they don't support the muffler. This is why the class is so attractive to a manufacturer, because the mo- torcycle that breaks the record looks exactly like the machine somebody can buy. We're al- lowed to make internal damper and engine modifications, so it's basically a near-stock bike run- ning on Pirelli World Superbike tires, which are mandated by the rules." The current SCTA P-P 1000 re- cord stands at 198.24 mph, set in 2012, and the team is confident they can achieve a new speed record after several shakedown runs at the El Mirage dry lakebed in California. WHEN WILL HAYDEN BE BACK? N icky Hayden was putting a brave face in Indianapolis on having to miss his closest home race, after major surgery to his right wrist has ruled him out for at least the first two GPs after the summer break. Hayden broke the scaphoid bone, exacerbating a much older injury, at the end of at the last GP of 2012 when he was knocked off at the first corner by Alvaro Bautista, and ever since has had problems. In the third and most comprehensive surgical intervention in less than a year, doctors removed three bones from the joint. Wearing a brace, Hayden described how, "I struggled a lot with my wrist this season… and the last two years." Three weeks after the operation, medical reports were so far encouraging. "I'm already in a lot less pain. Now we have to wait and see how much strength and range of motion I can get back. "I'm not sure yet when I'll be able to race – I'm seeing the doctors again this week. But I'll definitely be back this season." Nicky was joined by his racing brothers Tommy and Roger Lee and the rest of the family for the launch of his father Earl Hayden's book "The First Family of Racing," self-published, and bound to be a rattling good yarn. Michael Scott PHOTOGRAPHY BY GOLD & GOOSE Nicky Hayden isn't sure what race he will return for, but the former World Champion says he will definitely be back on the bike this season.
