IN THE WIND P34 CAMP ISDE S even members of the 2014 U.S. ISDE Team took part in a two-day training camp in North Scottsdale, Arizona, recently that should better prepare them for the 89th International Six Days Enduro in San Juan, Argentina, on November 3-8. Over the two days in the des- ert, they practiced riding special tests (four tests each day, ridden two times each, for a total of 16 test scores) each morning, then returned to base and changed tires in the heat of the day fol- lowed by a late lunch, review of scores and things to expect at Six Days. The riders able to take part were Mike Brown, Taylor Robert and Kailub Russell of the World Trophy team; Grant Baylor and Justin Jones of the Junior World Trophy team; and Andrew De- long and Gary Sutherlin of the Wellard Club team. Team Co-Director Antti Kal- lonen supervised the camp and ISDE veteran Destry Abbott at- tended to provide valuable sug- gestions as well as put in some laps himself. This is the first time in recent memory, if ever, that such a camp has been held. Not only did the riders get to practice tests, they did so on the bikes they'll be rid- ing in Argentina, right down to suspension and FIM-mandated enduro tires. With the terrain in San Juan expected to be very dry and desert-like, Kallonen felt Ari- zona offered the closest approxi- mation (and next year's camp will no doubt be held somewhere in the eastern U.S. to mimc condi- tions in Slovakia). Mark Kariya Antti Kallonen counts down the time during the Team USA ISDE train- ing camp that was recently held in Arizona. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK KARIYA EARL'S STORY I t doesn't take long after meet- ing Earl Hayden – father of rac- ers Tommy, Nicky and Roger Hayden – to figure out that he's a natural storyteller. Well, now those stories are in print in the Hayden's book: "The First Fam- ily of Racing" that was unofficial- ly launched last Thursday to the media at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Written in the voice of Earl with help of co-author Danny May, the book tells stories of growing up in a small town, racing, rais- ing five children and his battle with cancer. In addition to Earl's words there are chapters on Earl by each of the family members – his wife Rose, Tommy, Nicky, Roger, and daughters Kathleen and Jenny. The foreword is writ- ten by three-time World Cham- pion Kenny Roberts. "I've been blessed to have a great life so far, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to share it," said Earl. The book is $20 and is avail- able online at the Hayden Bros.
