40 Years Ago August 20, 1974
We featured Roger DeCoster, who was standing along side Brad Lackey,
on the cover 40 years ago and asked the question: Who is the best in the
world—DeCoster or Heikki Mikkola?... We covered the National Motocross
in Delta, Ohio, that was won by a pair of Jimmy's, Jimmy Ellis and Jimmy
Weinert… We traveled to Hinsdale, Illinois, to cover the Santa Fe National
Short Track for the second rounds of the
Camel Pro Series, where Kenny Roberts
took the win and extended his points lead.
30 Years Ago August 22, 1984
A photo of Randy Goss in action was featured on the cover of Cycle News
30 years ago to accompany our interview with the two-time dirt track champ.
We asked: Could he do it again?... We traveled to Lakewood, Colorado, to
cover the AMA 125, 250 and 500cc National Motocross that was won by Jeff
Ward, Ron Lechien and Broc Glover… We also went to Portland Inter-
national Speedway and watched Fred Merkel win round seven of the AMA
Superbike Championship… Ricky Graham overtook the Camel Pro Series
points lead with a win at the Peoria TT.

The new 2005 motocrossers were coming out and we were riding them and
featuring them on the cover. Ben Bostrom and Jeremy McGrath also got
some cover love after they claimed gold medals at the X Games. Bostrom got
his in the Supermoto contest and McGrath in the Step-Up… We reported on
the official closing of Carlsbad Raceway… Ryan Villopoto was the top Mini-
cycle rider at Ponca City; Suzuki rider Eli Tomac came away with a couple of
titles, as did KTM rider Cooper Webb in the 65cc 9-11 class.

Guess who was on the cover for winning the Peoria TT again? Yup, Chris Carr.
We also pictured the all-new 1995 Kawasaki KDX200 to accompany our
road test of the legendary off-road bike… We covered the 125 and 250cc AMA
National Motocross at Spring Creek, where Steve Lamson and John Down
pounded out the victories… Bobby Moore won both motos at the 125cc MX
GP in Germany. With two rounds left, he held
a 30-point lead in the championship… We
featured an interview with legendary drag racer
Terry Vance.
