T
his year's revived Sacra-
mento Mile played host to
an epic duel. Not the pis-
tols drawn at dawn variety, but
instead a pair of fire-breathing
XRs in a duel between two of the
biggest legends in the history of
the AMA Grand National Cham-
pionship – Jay Springsteen and
Chris Carr.
It started out looking fairly
mild, but boy did it heat up.
Carr got the holeshot on
the Zanotti Racing Harley, but
Springer and his Rogers Rac-
ing Harley was chomping at the
bit. The pair swapped the lead
back and forth over the course
of the five-lap sprint and, as it of-
ten does, it came down to a drag
race to the finish line out of the
final corner. The crowd was go-
ing wild. Carr led, but Springer
drafted past to take the win in a
near photo finish.
So it was smiles all around the
Cal Expo Fair. Even for Carr.
"It's really hard to ride when
you're laughing and grinning so
damn hard," Carr said on the po-
dium. "But I tell you what there's
nobody I'd rather be doing this
with than this guy today. He's 57
and can still haul mail. I've always
enjoyed racing with him and it's
even more fun to go play with
him."
Springsteen also thoroughly
enjoyed it.
"It feels so good to be back
on the bike," Springsteen said.
"It's just like riding a bicycle; you
