Carver. They both stayed upright
and Carver kept his position, but
later fell victim to Martin's oil on
the track. Beach took advantage
and ended the night fifth in his
first dirt track of the season.
"It was fun to get back to my
roots," Beach said. "My main goal
this weekend was to make the
main first and just have fun. I wasn't
really worried about where I was
going to finish, but then I ended up
fifth. So it was a good night."
Johnson moved up to take
seventh after Sammy Halbert
crashed in the tight left hander
before the back straight. Hal-
bert was able to pick up the bike
quickly and only loose one spot
to finish eighth.
Zanotti Racing's Stevie Bon-
sey, who was riding with a bum
ankle after his tangle last week
with Halbert at the end of the
Sacramento Mile, ended up
ninth.
Behind Bonsey it was a rough
day for Smith who left Sacramen-
to on a high and in the lead for
the championship, but struggled
all day at Castle Rock. The Villa
Esparza Kawasaki rider had to
make it to the main through the
semi and started on the third row
of the grid.
"Basically, I just screwed up
the whole day is what you can
just write," Smith summed it up.
