T
hroughout his career, Screamin' Eagle
Harley-Davidson's Eddie Krawiec has
rarely had to play the role of underdog
but he was clearly not the favorite when he
took on Jerry Savoie in the final of the NHRA
Sonoma Nationals. Krawiec and the rest of
the Pro Stock Motorcycle field had spent the
entire weekend chasing Savoie's White Al-
ligator Suzuki and it appeared that the only
one capable of beating Savoie was Savoie.
That is exactly how the final round played out
as Savoie let the clutch out a fraction of a
second too soon and drew a red-light start,
allowing Krawiec to take his second win of
the season and 24th of his career.
"Going into the final I was 100 percent
concerned about Jerry," Krawiec said. "We
[Vance & Hines] build his engines and we
know what he's capable of. He's doing an
awesome job and I'm not afraid to admit that
he had a better bike than I did this weekend,
but that's why we drag race. We don't run
these races on paper. Things like red-lights
can happen and I'm just glad that I was there
to take advantage of it when it did."
Krawiec has been dominant at times this
season, particularly in qualifying with five
pole awards in the first eight races, but he's
had difficulty converting that to race wins.
Other than his victory at the Atlanta round
in May, Krawiec hasn't won nearly as often
as he would have liked and he admitted that
frustration was beginning to mount.
