FLAT TRACK AMA GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 8/JULY 26, 2014 CAL EXPO FAIR/SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA P64 to see what they were going to do. But once Robinson got into the mix, he ultimately was unable to keep up with the lead four and rode a lonely race to finish fifth. "It was all right. It's a solid fin- ish, I guess," Coolbeth said about his race. "I wouldn't call it a good finish. It's top five. That's what my goal is this year, definitely top five every race. I want to win, but we gained all day on the motorcycle; these guys worked hard, just get them next time." The battle for sixth was fought between Zanotti Racing's Ste- vie Bonsey, South East Harley- Davidon's Sammy Halbert, and Screamin' Eagle Harley-David- son's Brad Baker. In the end, it was the reigning champ that would come out on top, fighting back from a poor start to take the spot on the last lap. "Of course I can't be the happi- est with finishing outside the top five and off the podium again, but to put it to Stevie [Bonsey] and Sammy [Halbert] there on the last lap was pretty cool," Baker said on a positive note. "And the bikes are starting to run a lot better, the team and I are working really well together and the bikes are han- dling great. We just need to get a little bit more steam underneath us and I think we'll be right where we need to be." Halbert also didn't get the greatest of starts and being out of touch with Robinson, it was a battle for sixth, which he ended up ahead of Bonsey to take sev- enth. "Kind of a frustrating race," Halbert summed it up. "I want to come back here next time with a faster bike." Rounding out the top 10 was Briar Bauman on the Dodge Brothers Harley-Davidson and Cory Texter on the Kawasaki. Make It A Michigan Double Kyle Johnson scored a big come- back victory in the Pro Singles class against championship rival Davis Fisher, making it a Michi- gan sweep of the Sacramento Mile. Fisher led most of the race while building up a healthy gap, 1.2 seconds at one point. Mean- while, Johnson was recovering from a poor start and battling for second with Nick Armstrong, Dominic Colindres and Bronson Bauman. Once Johnson claimed second and shook that pack loose, he charged after Fisher, catching him and taking the lead with two laps to go. He held off Fisher to take the win by 0.025 of a second. "I didn't know I'd be able to catch him that fast," Johnson said. "I really had to make some perfect laps and hit all my marks perfectly. I knew I really had to push it and I actually drafted past him. That last lap I knew I had to push it and make the corner perfect because otherwise Davis was going to draft back past me." Smith takes team owner Joe Esparza along for his well- earned victory lap.
