Anytime the series shows up at a Mile, the 31 year old from Flint, Michigan, is a contender. "It's just something that comes natural to me," Smith said about riding the big tracks. "You've got to be really smooth and think more than just do. I think that's a lot of it." The Dash for Cash was red flagged after Brandon Robinson went down after making contact with Sammy Halbert. "A little bit of a racing inci- dent," Robinson said. "Kind of one of those things that could've been avoided, but Sammy poked his nose in there and took my bars. It's just shit happens, I guess. Like I said, it could've been avoided but its part of it and we'll move on." Robinson was unhurt in the incident. Fortunately for Jared Mees the Dash for Cash restart was just two laps because that was just about the time limit his face shield had. Mees changed out shields before the restart and didn't get it sealed up properly. On the final lap, as he was coming off the final corner, the shield came off. An open eye port at speed on a dusty, sandy dirt track is not awesome, but winning the dash and taking a championship point is. Fans at the Sacramento Mile were treated to an exhibition race between two of sport's legends—Jay Spring- steen and Chris Carr. The pair put on a great show and in the end it was "Springer" who came across the line in first place. Apparently getting older hasn't meant getting slower for these two champs, as they were only half a second off the leaders in the Expert race. Stevie Bonsey had trouble with his A bike during the heat race, so he had to jump on the bike Chris Carr road in the exhibition race and, de- spite it being an unknown, he was pleasantly surprised. "That bike we had, had a whole different set up," Bonsey said. "So I was kind of ner- vous, but we went out there and it continued on next page Bryan Smith (42) held off the pack – Jared Mees (9), Jake Johnson (5), Kenny Coolbeth (2) and Henry Wiles (17) – and went on to take his fourth-straight win at the Sacramento Mile.
